March Birchbox and Ipsy Bag Reviews

I’ve been meaning to post this for a while as I usually post the reviews for the previous month around the time I get the April boxes.

Birchbox

mar_13_bb

If I were to put Birchbox and Ipsy up against each other (which I usually do), Birchbox would have won hands down for the month of March, not that the products for the month were anything special, Ipsy just dropped the ball. So here’s what I got in my March Birchbox and what I thought of the products:

  1. Incoco® Design Nail Polish Appliques – I had never tried any nail strip type product before so I was excited to try these. I wasn’t crazy about the design, but Incoco appears to have some better designs on their website. Now putting these on wasn’t exactly easy and they didn’t turn out fantastic, but they held up way longer than had I just painted my nails. (I’m talking 2 weeks vs. a few days.) I did apply a top coat to my nails even though it said you didn’t have to so I have no idea if that helped.
  2. Serge Normant Meta Revive Dry Shampoo – My hair is fine and gets oily quite quickly so this was fantastic on those nights I wanted to go out late but didn’t want to shower again. I don’t think I’d be able to use it rather than washing my hair for the day. It gave my hair just enough “oomph” for the night though.
  3. Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream – Maybe it was the sample size for this product and not knowing how much to use, but I just didn’t see anything special about this shave cream. It had the consistency of a Clearasil cream cleanser, that didn’t lather well or do much of anything but rinse right off. I’m not one to use shave cream often in general. My Schick Hydro Silk razor and some body wash is normally enough, but $20 for the full size of this product just seems outrageous to me.
  4. Madewell for Birchbox Nail Emery Board – The other side of this emery board is a floral print that just isn’t really my taste. I guess it’s quite appropriate for Spring, but wasn’t for me. It also wasn’t anything special. Just a basic nail file.
  5. Caldrea Body Lotion – I have to be honest with this one. I haven’t had dry skin so I haven’t tried these at the time of writing this. I will try and post an update if I do try them.

Ipsy

mar_13_ipsy

Ipsy just didn’t live up to my expectations with this box. The bags themselves lately seem to be getting cheaper and cheaper, but usually the products aren’t that bad. March was pretty disappointing though.

  1. La Fresh Travel Lite Makeup Remover 8ct Pouch – These are the perfect size to travel with. I was excited when my aunt (also an Ipsy subscriber) sent them to my house with all her other  not so favorite Ipsy products. They will definitely live in my travel bag, but nothing really special about them.
  2. Juice Beauty Hydrating Mist – I’m not sure whether the sprayer for this sample was bad or what. I was excited to try this product, but the sprayer was just not meant for the product. I sprayed it on my face as I would with my Skindinavia finishing spray but I ended up getting soaked which just frustrated me. I have no idea if it would have worked better on my hair because after the shower it gave me, I put it away.
  3. GlamRX GlamRX Mini Freestyle Palette – I suppose if I redid my makeup on the go, this would be a good idea, but it was fairly useless to me.
  4. yaby Eyeshadow Refill – I got the two more neutral shades in the picture. They weren’t anything special that I really wanted to try, so these honestly didn’t get used. I put them in the GlamRX palette and they are now sitting in a drawer.

My overall impressions should be obvious. Birchbox had it all over Ipsy for March. As a sneak peak towards next month’s review, I think Birchbox again may be a winner.

My {Filofax} Week 16

Paper Lovestory's My Week

Hi readers! I’m sure many of you have been wondering where I’ve disappeared to. I had been meaning to post a few things over the past week but got distracted with other things. I’m going to try to get back into the swing of things, but things on here may have to get put on hold for a bit. I promise it will be worth it though.

Here’s my week:

photo 1

It’s a bit blurry, and you’ll see not much was checked off. I did get things done though, just not that stuff!

My air purifier and Allegra have been working miracles on my allergies.

I finished reading the Hunger Games trilogy which I have to admit was pretty enjoyable.  I also finished a silly book, Nadia Knows Best, that I checked out from the library’s ebook site. I guess it would have been better had I lived in Europe as I had to pay attention to every day cultural references. I did understand a few though one of which was the mention of a Filofax!

My school assignments were pushed back a week, so I got another week to relax!

We had some meetings at work. Nothing too interesting.

Saturday morning, I went to my wonderful friend’s new house. It’s just gorgeous and I’m so happy for her! The plan was to help her paint. While her mom painted the kitchen AND dining room, we managed to paint one tiny hallway only to decide the color (or lack of color) wasn’t working. The white was just overpowering and made you feel really uncomfortable. At least now it’s a good color to paint over… I spent the majority of the day at her house, but when I got home, I was still in painting mode so I broke out the ceiling paint and an edger and painted the edges of my ceiling. Mr. Chase also tried helping by learning to climb a ladder with the help of some cat treats. He spent the rest of the night climbing up and down just for the heck of it.

photo

Sunday turned out to be an exhausting one. I woke up with the intention of just painting a second coat on the edges of my ceiling since bits of pink from the walls had been coming through. That took about 10 minutes thanks to my handy dandy edge tool. Then I decided to paint around my ceiling fan and light fixtures… My hallway light fell off in my hands and wouldn’t go back up. I couldn’t let it go because it was hanging from the wires but I was also the only one in the house… so I stood there stupidly holding it, hoping that my mother or someone else would have heard me calling for help over the stereo. Eventually someone came, but we couldn’t get the light back up, so I ran down, switched off the breaker (which cut power to my whole room), shoved the cat tower under the light, painted around it, and waited for the paint to dry. I was stuck in my room (the cat tower blocking my door) with no power, so I asked for a paint tray and roller and started working on painting my ceiling. I’d say I got around 2/3 of the way done my bedroom before I realized the floor was incredibly comfortable and didn’t want to move anymore.

I hope you enjoyed reading about my week. Stay tuned for the very late March Ipsy/Birchbox review and the proper introduction to my bedroom project complete with sort of before pictures.

My {Filofax} Week 15

Paper Lovestory's My Week

I really enjoyed the weather this past week. Overall it was a great week, and I’m happy to say I can feel the chaos subsiding a bit.

Here’s my week:

20130415-174257.jpg

Monday started off a bit rocky. My alarm went off. I hopped in the shower as usual, immediately realized I didn’t submit my discussion post the night before, and had to accept that I actually forgot to submit an assignment for the first time in YEARS. I continued getting ready as usual, checked my email quickly from my phone and glanced at the time – 6:20 a.m. – I was up an hour early because my clock set itself forward for the old Daylight Savings Time. I momentarily had an “Are you kidding me?!” moment, but decided to not let it get me down. I hadn’t written my “My Week” post for the previous week so I had a chance to do that. I also, ironically, forgot to set my alarm early the night before to give me time to stop at our Parking Services office at the far end of campus to pick up my new GATED parking pass. It’s utterly fantastic to be able to park in a garage right behind my building. Getting to work early meant I also had time to stop at the Starbucks on campus – my treat for seeing the positives in being woken up early rather than being frustrated. Over all it was an incredibly great day. Even my training demo went well. {I still don’t like doing them, and I still get tongue-tied out of nervousness, but they aren’t nearly as bad as they used to be.}

Tuesday through Wednesday were fairly quiet days. More gorgeous weather that meant dressing like it’s 30 degrees out wouldn’t work. I quickly realized that my closet is seriously lacking in clothes for warm weather, but I made do with what I had. I even figured I’d swap my usual boots out for a cute pair of flats to give my feet a break. Sadly my feet didn’t enjoy that too much and after two days of acquiring blisters, I swapped my flats out for some wedges. Apparently my feet prefer heels. I also managed to have a wonderful dinner with a really good friend on Wednesday.

Thursday I felt absolutely scatterbrained. So much so, I actually locked my keys in my office on my way to lunch. Thankfully there was a spare key upstairs, but I felt pretty silly. Since then, I’ve been mindful about where my keys are, at one point even clipping them to my belt loop. My coworker joked that his mother does the same thing to keep from losing things.

Friday was a bit rainy, but I actually enjoyed it. I wore my polka-dot rain boots into work and brought shoes to change into because it was raining so hard. I don’t know what it is about rain boots but they make my day. I feel like a little kid wanting to stomp in all the puddles around campus, but as a “professional” employee, I refrain.

I’ve been trying to stick to my “routine” as closely as possible this week. Making sure to work out each evening, spend time catching up on chores, etc. It’s a work in progress but I notice myself thinking “Okay, what should I be doing now?” more often rather than just doing nothing, and working out puts me in such a better mood.

I didn’t do so well in terms of not shopping this week. I purchased a new alarm clock so I’m not caught waking up an hour late when it decides to fall back an hour. Chase got some new Cat Dancer toys which are his favorite. I ordered some more Coletos from Jet Pens, makeup odds and ends from Drugstore.com (I had coupons and cash back offers). I ordered a Leatherman Style CS (a pink limited edition one that’s no longer available) so that I could leave my other one at work. I also revamped my wardrobe with a bunch of clothes from Forever21, Alloy, and Charlotte Russe. Overall I spent entirely way too much, but not too much, that I can’t pay off the balance on my credit card entirely by next week, and I did need new clothes.

Here’s to another week! Thanks for reading!

{Sunday Social} Week #9

Sunday Social

Boy is my internet slow today. Writing this has been a bit of a pain. It took nearly 5 minutes to simply get to the page to write the post. *end of rant* Happy Sunday everyone! It’s been a gorgeous week of nearly perfect weather. This week’s post is all about Twitter. If you don’t follow me already, follow my blog @littlelifeblog AND me @andreamocko for more general ramblings.

1. When did you join twitter? – According to Twitter, I joined in February of 2008. My blog account is a bit more recent and is less than a month old.
2. Who is your favorite non-celeb to follow? – I used to be a bit obsessed with the Apple fan community. I liked to tweak my Mac here and there to the point it didn’t look like a Mac. At one point I found my favorite icon designers had twitter accounts and I wanted to follow them. Louie Mantia (@mantia), a great designer, happens to be one of the few I still follow. {I sure hope he doesn’t find this mildly creeperish.} I’m slightly jealous of his frequent trips to Disney theme parks.
3. Who is your favorite celeb to follow? – It’s a tie between two “somewhat” celebrity accounts – the Tone It Up girls (@ToneItUp) and Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal (@oatmeal). The Tone It Up girls are always so motivating. Matthew Inman always seems to have my laughing or learning something new. Last week I learned about a crazy rainbow killing shrimp.
4. Have you ever had a celeb respond to a tweet? – I use Twitter more for following companies and products I like truthfully. While I don’t use Twitter as my #1 news source, that’s it’s main purpose for me. Following celebrities often clutters up my feed with rants about first-world problems.
5. What is your favorite store/brand to follow? – I have to say I enjoy following Sephora the most. They have some really handy tips.
6. Give us three tweeps we should be following. – Carly (@collegeprepster) is one of my favorite blogs at the moment. Definitely check her out. @omgthatspunny is another one that I enjoy. They post some pretty silly puns. And for one of the cutest families ever, be sure to check out Missy (@xopinkpistachio) another one of my favorite bloggers at the moment.

{Filofax Friday} Updates

It’s Friday! That means a Filofax post. This week, I’m giving some quick updates on how the changes in my Filofax are going.

week-14-filofax

I mentioned in my most recent “Week” post that I was experimenting with the Cotton Cream Wo2P inserts this week. I’m happy to say that I think they are here to stay. I love the space, and I feel like I can be a bit more creative. I just wish Filofax would start making the rest of my inserts in Cotton Cream so that my OCD wasn’t bugging me.

But…

That’s not the only thing that’s changed. I did go ahead and swap out my Month per page plus Notes inserts for the Month on 2 Pages even though I said I wasn’t going to. Admittedly, I’m not using them much right now, but I didn’t use my Month per page ones either. The big difference is that it involved switching up the layout a bit to have all the monthly pages together rather than interspersed in the weekly pages. So far it’s not too big of a difference since I didn’t use them much anyway.

My most favorite additions though are two new Coletos. I happened to be browsing Jet Pens the other day and noticed a whole bunch of new Coleto bodies on there. I’ve been seeing some others pop up in some photos on Flickr as well. Now I love my Black 5-barrel Coleto, but it does have a bit of a cheap look to it. I’ve been keeping my eye open for new Coletos that looked a bit nicer. These two 3-barrel ones from the Sweet line (pictured & linked below) found their way into my cart first. They arrived quite quickly as always, and I adore them, so much so, I’ve decided I want the 4-color barrels instead so they are on their way to me now along with the other two colors blue and peach as well. I mean how cute are they!? It’s hard to see from the pictures, but the mint green one has asterisk-like symbols on it. The pink one has little bows.  They all have a little dotted silver band where the pattern ends.

Rounding out my changes was switching from .4mm refills to .5mm. I have tried all of the sizes now. My overall opinion was that .3mm was too scratchy; .4mm was alright, but .5mm makes my writing look much better. Having said that, the .5mm black refill I have is scratchier than the other colors. Given that I had to fill my cart up to $25 to not pay $7 for shipping, I added some colors to try out: Baby pink, Apricot Orange, and Brown. The current set of colors I’m using is:

  • Apricot Orange – for work
  • Baby Pink – Anything involving other people
  • Clear Blue – Anything involving just me
  • Apple Green – Financial
  • Violet – for school
  • and Black of course for everything else.

If you haven’t tried a Coleto pen, definitely check them out. They are by far my favorite. I ditched my Frixions for them, and they make having one pen loop in a Filofax a bit more bearable (provided it’s elasticized).

That’s it for the update!

April 2013 Goals

april-goals

I absolutely love April. It means gorgeous weather is ahead. That means I can start having lunch by the pond again and not have to worry about freezing my butt off as I walk to work.

A recap on March’s projects and goals:

My focus in March was on my budget. I have to say I was a bit optimistic with my savings goals, but I didn’t do so bad overall. I’m really happy with how things turned out.

  • I’ve used Smartypig as my main savings account for a while now. If you haven’t checked it out yet, I highly recommend it. It automatically takes money out of my paycheck and deposits it into various savings goals I have. It’s got a fantastic interest rate as well. You can redeem your savings goals as gift cards and they will actually give you a bonus percentage for certain retailers or you can have it put back in your regular bank. The downside is that it does take a little bit of time to get your money. In some ways this is great, because I really do have to evaluate my purchases, but should an emergency come up, I’d likely need to put the expense on my credit card temporarily and pay for it once the money gets back to my checking account a week later.
  • At the beginning of March, I was planning to save around $315 from every pay check just to save it, around $60 dollars for things on my wishlist, and another $25 for my Christmas fund. I managed to keep to my wishlist and Christmas goals, but I did have to reduce the amount of money I was setting aside to around $200. I give nearly half of my income to my mom every month so that she can pay bills, so usually one paycheck a month just goes straight to her so I had to rethink my spending habits and decided it makes more sense to save less right now than putting things all on my credit card because I was saving too much.
  • March means time to submit taxes and I managed to get mine submitted. I even used a promo code and saved on filing them. I used my refund to pay back the majority of my one remaining balance on my credit cards, and now I’m using a total of 11% of my credit which feels fantastic. I’m really trying to cut back on my use of my credit cards so that I can be able to pay them off completely at the end of the month, so I took my credit cards out of my main wallet and out of my password manager. No easy access to auto-fill the info means I have to think before I buy.
  • Reading – I’m working on reading both Blogging for Dummies and Blog. – Since graduating from college, reading has become an unexpected hobby of mine, so much so I actually went and purchased a Kindle Paperwhite on March 22. I not only read the two books I planned to read, but I read a total of 4 others. The number would have probably been higher but I lent my Kindle to my mom to read a book I had checked out. In any event, 6 books in one month is just beyond ridiculous for me, and seeing that, I upped my reading challenge from 20 books to 30 for the year.
  • Making progress on my room renovations – This is such a big project, and I’m so overwhelmed with it. I managed to get almost through patching with a few spots I need to go over once more. The next step is to start painting which I’m really dreading, BUT before pictures have been taken so I can start letting you all see the progress which is exciting.
  • Completing FMS’s March Photo Challenge. – I really need to find a fun and exciting photo challenge because these FMS photo challenges are just not working for me. I managed to get 16 photos done, but I played catch up for most of the month snapping pictures in bursts rather than daily.

At the beginning of the year, I typed up a document with what I would focus on each month, but stupidly I saved it as “Untitled” in a rush and deleted it. I didn’t realize it until it was removed off my backup drive, so now I’m making this up as I go along, and I’m declaring April’s focus:

Work

Nice weather means I’m going to wish I could still lounge around outside after class or take the dogs out to the local Starbucks for an adventure, so it’s a bit depressing knowing that I’m a grown up now and I can’t because I have to sit behind a desk. Focusing on work will make sure I have a few things to stay focused on:

  • Compiling a list of Skillsoft Courses – My job provides me with courses for various things from computer certifications to stress relief, and I have been meaning to compile a list of them that I think I’d be interested in or would be of use to myself or the students in the office. They may not be able to take the courses, but I can certainly pass on some knowledge to them.
  • The semester ends in May, and I’d like to provide our student employees with performance evaluations and maybe raises before they leave, so I need to figure out the budget which I’ve never had to do, iron out the processes I want to use, and schedule to meet with all of them before they get all stressed out with Finals.
  • Lastly, our department is trying to focus on an online support knowledge base of sorts to help continue to provide answers to our customers while also being able to focus on improving things for the future. Tidying up this space has been on my radar for a while, and I hope that with the help of my colleagues we can get some Spring cleaning done.

Other April projects include:

  • Evaluating my current wardrobe to see what I need to add or replace for warmer weather. I know for a fact I need to replace the basic tanks I wear under some of my more transparent shirts, but I also want to get some new things in bright spring colors. I’m quite tired of my go to winter look of skinny pants, boots, a shirt and sweater over top.
  • I’d like to tackle painting at least my ceiling in my bedroom. Once that’s done, the painting will go quickly because I can do smaller bits at a time.
  • I’m also going to work on managing my time better. That means sticking to my usual routine to get things done, workouts, blog posts, and school work included.
  • I’m also working on something I’ve sort of informally dubbed “Project Andrea.” It’s my fairly extensive plan to revamp my life, and I’m pretty excited to start. I’ll post more about what my goals for this project are in a later post.
  • Also, this month’s photo challenge is Filofax themed so I’m excited. I’ve been revamping my Filofax here and there so I’m excited to share the little updates I’m making.

I’m really thrilled that it’s April. I’m already excited, and we’re only 6 days in!

My {Filofax} Week 14

Paper Lovestory's My Week

So funny story this morning… I use one of those “smart “clocks that automatically adjusts for Daylight Savings Time, except mine’s old so it’s programmed to the old day light savings time. Turns out today would have been the day that clocks went forward according to the old. My alarm went off. I got ready as usual, picked up my phone midway through getting ready to check my email, and noticed it was like 6:20… Thankfully it sprung forward rather than me being an hour late. I guess it’s finally time to order that new alarm clock. Anyway, here I am up WAY too early, but it worked out well because I can write this post which I did not write yesterday as planned and also head to get my new parking pass for the gated garage right behind the building I work in! No more 10 minute walks in heels! YAY! I also managed to stop by the Starbucks on campus too.

Here’s my week:

week-14-filofax

So first off, if you’ve been following along with my weekly posts, you’ll notice a change – Cotton Cream inserts. I’m liking them so far but I may be the only one who wishes these were on white paper. I like everything being the same color and daily and monthly pages don’t come in Cotton Cream. The super observant might also spy some new Coleto pens which I will dish all the details on in Friday’s post.

If there was ever a week that I just failed miserably at everything, this would be it. I just wasn’t with it. I was distracted and falling apart.

Monday I woke up not feeling well at all. I emailed everyone at work and said I wouldn’t be in. In a way, it worked out well, because apparently I had a meeting mis-scheduled on my calendar that I’d have never known about until I walked all the way across campus and realized no one was there.

Tuesday and Wednesday went fairly smoothly. No surprises really.

Thursday I woke up and my eyes were insanely puffy, but I convinced myself to make the best of it and go to work, because I had a meeting with my boss. I have never been able to drive with glasses, so I put my contacts in and hoped for the best. Puffy eyes and contacts don’t mix. All day, my eyes were wrinkling my contacts as I blinked. Adding stress to the day, I had to lead another Box demo on campus. This time it was without the guys who normally lead the whole process so it was sort of up to me to make sure it went smoothly.

Friday was pretty much unbearable. When I woke up, my eyes were even worse than the day before. They weren’t only puffy, but they had started peeling and they stung. Nothing worse than dry, scaly, stinging eyes, so in an effort to not put my contacts in, I decided to see if I could work from home because I . Thankfully my boss agreed. It’s really amazing how much work you can get done when you are cut off from distractions. I have my own office at work, but the “walls” are glass above desk height. They also don’t go up to the ceiling so even if I shut my door, people can still easily ask me things through the glass. There is really no privacy whatsoever so working from home let me work fairly uninterrupted on cleaning up some of our online support documentation.

The weather over the weekend was absolutely gorgeous. I spent the majority of it outside or out and about. My car enjoyed a nice, well-deserved bath too. Unfortunately good weather is distracting to me, and I woke up this morning realizing I forgot to turn in my assignment Sunday night. The class doesn’t accept late work, so I just have to move on and take the missing grade. Hopefully I have better luck this week.

I hope you enjoyed reading about my week.

{Sunday Social} Week #8

Sunday Social

Happy Sunday everyone. This week it’s all about Pinterest. Now I know some people in the Philofaxy community dislike Pinterest. I do find it weird when I find my own stuff on there, but I really enjoy using it to save and share things with other people. I like getting ideas for  fashionable work attire, recipes, and quick tips, but I also use it as my wish list. I’m using it to plan my room renovations, and I also use it as a place to share products I love with others. So check me out on Pinterest if you haven’t already.

1. What is your favorite outfit pin? – So I went to private school from Kindergarten through senior year of high school, that’s nearly 13 years of uniforms. In college, I gravitated towards simple jeans and a t-shirt looks, but when I got my full-time job at a university, I was given one rule for what to wear, “Don’t look like a student.” Easier said than done when your 22 years old and 5’1″. I still get asked if I’m there for orientation on a regular basis. In any event, Pinterest has been a great source of inspiration for how to look professional without dressing like I’m 50. My current favorite look for Spring is this one:

2. What is your favorite food pin? – By far the favorite thing I’ve made so far is going to be the super simple peanut butter fudge recipe. I mean 2 ingredients, a couple minutes, and I’ve been told it’s better than the more complicated recipes.

3. What is your favorite wedding pin? – I have absolutely no wedding pins on Pinterest, and I sort of intend to keep it that way until I have a wedding to pin about which with any luck will be sooner than later.

4. What is your favorite DIY/craft pin? – I don’t typically pin crafts, but I do have a few. I had grand plans to have some of these in my office this winter, but they didn’t happen. Maybe next year.

5. What is your favorite quote/verse/lyric pin? –
Also not a huge pinner of lyrics, but this is one of my favs.

6. Share one more random pin you love. –
Now that Spring’s here, I’m starting to think about what I need to add to my wardrobe for Spring, and I’m thinking these shoes are going to be fairly high on my list.

{Filofax Friday} Pondering Change

Reading some of my recent posts, some of you may have caught on that I’ve been neglecting my Osterley lately. I’ve found that when things in my life get hectic, the smart thing to do would be to rely heavily on my planner, but I do just the opposite which only makes matters worse. My life isn’t terribly hectic, but not using a planner makes me feel like it is, and when it gets hectic, I want to use my planner even less, so I was in a bit of a catch 22, and I had to do something about it.

This week I started my first experiment by swapping my Week on a Page plus notes inserts for the spare Week on 2 Pages cotton cream inserts I had gotten with my Osterley. Keeping in mind my commitment to not buy any more planners in 2013, I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t have them on hand already.

Now I’m going to throw out a bit of a disclaimer here. I realize I just wrote a post on how I got out of planner fail, and to some of you it may seem like I am in planner fail now that I’m considering change. I don’t necessarily consider this planner fail though. Normally I’d be out buying 20 more planners right now, but I’m actually still keeping the same system – my monthly overview, a weekly spread for forward planning, and daily pages for planning out my day. I know it works for me and there’s no need to change it nor do I want to, and again, I’m not buying anything additional. I had the inserts already.

Anyway, I have been increasingly bothered by Filofax’s silly idea to cram five languages and foreign holidays onto a week per page diary. I mean they sell inserts specially made for most countries already printed in the correct language, so is there really still a need to print all 5 languages? Can’t we at least get a 1 language version because I really don’t need to know how to say my days of the week in other languages, and I don’t want to have to rig a set up of Week per page with note paper in between. I like having the week on the same side. If the languages weren’t enough, they have to print all the other countries’ holidays too. I mean they are interesting to know, but not something I need to be reminded of in my planner. I’d be fine without them. *end of rant*

Looking at my weekly pages, some days I just had NO room for my appointments because of all the languages and holidays. I always had room on my notes pages though, so I figured maybe I didn’t really need a full page to write my graduate assignments on. The cotton cream Wo2P diary has a notes section at the top so I’m going to test them out for a few weeks. When I had originally got them in my Osterley, I didn’t use them purely because I have OCD and all my other diary pages weren’t in cotton cream which bothered me a lot more than I’d like to admit. I really wish Filofax made the other diary inserts in cotton cream as well just so there was consistency in my planner, but I’ve found with Filofax it’s more wish in one hand and… {you know the rest…}

Another change I’m considering is swapping out the Month per page for the Month on 2 page insert I have on hand. I bought both of them at the beginning of this year knowing that I may want to swap them at some point. But that’s a little bit more change than I’m willing to take on right now. One thing at a time…

Meet the Cats

Today, I’m back with another post about the rest of the animals in my crazy house. This week it’s the cats’ turn. I meant to post this last week, but I got a bit overwhelmed last week and needed to take a bit of a break.

We’ve always had cats at my house ever since I was born. My house already had dogs, so somehow I ended up acquiring cats. We currently have three, which I now know in hindsight is WAY too many. Given that I’m 22, living at home, and have three cats, I tend to come off as some crazy cat lady, so let me defend myself really quick, because I’m not. I like all animals. If it were possible, I’d probably have three sloths instead because I find them quite amusing and adorable, but I assume they don’t make good pets. I’d have dogs if I didn’t already have two, and I didn’t have to let them out. For my lazy lifestyle, cats just work better. I can leave for a day or two and as long as they have some food and a flushed toilet {more on that in a bit…} they’re okay. They don’t require that much care.

So that brings me to the cats I have now.

The oldest is Abu, named after the monkey in Aladdin. He’s around 9 years old. I got him and his “adopted brother”, Mokey, when I was in high school. He could fit in the palm of my hand when I got him. Now he’s a massive 19lbs. Mokey sadly passed away, but Abu is still quite active for a fat cat. He’s got the personality and looks of Garfield usually, but he can be quite silly at times especially when he poses like this.

After Mokey passed away, I felt Abu needed a friend. I found Skyler at a local Petsmart. She was adorable and also quite cuddly and accepting for a kitten. She came home with me a short 30 minutes later. I honestly wondered what I had done when I brought her home. Abu HATED her, and she turned into a completely different cat. It was non-stop growling for about a month until I discovered the Comfort Zone Cat Diffuser, and Abu and Skyler became friends. Abu accepted her, but unfortunately, she never really accepted anyone else in the house. She’s a few years old now, but she still hates every person in the house but me. I almost feel bad for her because she wants the attention so bad, but if anyone gets near her, she screams bloody murder and goes into full on attack mode.

Normally two cats is the magic number in our house. With only one, they tend to imitate the dogs. Two gives them a cat role model and someone to play with.

BUT… my former roommates cats ended up getting together and having A LOT of kittens. I’m not even sure what the final number was, but I ended up falling in love with one of the first four. I didn’t need another cat. I just figured I could provide a better life for him than he’d have gotten anywhere else, and I already had 2 so honestly what was one more… Apparently that one more is the magic number that makes you seem like a crazy cat lady.

In any event, I brought Chase home. Again, Abu hated him, and Skyler was confused. This time I was prepared with those diffusers though and the process went much more smoothly. Now two years later, they are all best friends. Abu has someone to cuddle with at night. Skyler has someone to run around the house with. Surprisingly, his favorite friends happen to be the dogs in the house, and now I’m not entirely sure he understands he’s a cat. He’s chewed up a number of shoes and other things in the house. He plays fetch. He sits and speaks on command. He even sits on the sofa just like the dogs and watches the birds with them.

So now you know the cats who have thankfully become one big happy family, so I guess I have to explain my reference to a flushed toilet earlier in this post. This is usually the part that solidifies everyone’s idea that I’m a crazy cat lady….I toilet trained my cats. Yes, I know that it’s weird. I myself still find it weird to be woken up in the middle of the night to a cat in my bathroom, but the practicality of it all outweighs the weirdness in my opinion.

Vets advise that the rule of thumb for litter boxes is 1 box per cat + 1. Well in my case, that’s a total of 4 boxes. My cats stay in my room when I’m not home, and my room is large, but not large enough for 4 litter boxes. Not to mention, can you imagine how much of a chore it would be to keep 4 of them clean! I obviously didn’t stick to that rule. They happily shared one massive box that I kept in my bathroom. Twice every day, I had to clean out the box. If I was particularly motivated, I took the old litter outside. Otherwise it went in a litter trash can until I felt like taking it out. When I wasn’t cleaning the box, I was sweeping up litter because Chase thought he needed to dig his way to China. My life, needless to say became dominated by that litter box, and I hated it.

I had heard about toilet training cat before and actually considered training one of my previous cats, but we decided against it because at the time, it would have involved my parents’ bathroom which is also accessible from our family room. I imagined someone waking up in the middle of the night or worse a guest not realizing the litter and being pretty annoyed at me so I decided against it. Things were different now though. The cats’ used my personal bathroom, and I was a bit more understanding considering I was the one dealing with the litter chaos. On a whim, I took the plunge into what ended up being one of the most worthwhile but frustrating projects I’ve ever undertaken.

Morning, day, and night, I found myself potty-potty training cats. {It’s still so freaking weird to say…} The package said it could be done in 8 weeks. I’m here to say that’s a flat out lie. Maybe it’s different with just one cat, but I’ve lost track of how long it’s been since I started. I’m on the very last step of the kit (just the seat part that held the different trays), and I really don’t see that ending any time soon. Given our downstairs kitchen sink {that we never use} or a bath mat, they still would rather use them, but I try to look at the bright side of things. I’m always mindful of what is on my bathroom floor so that it doesn’t become a place to pee or poop so now it’s always tidy. I’m not making weekly trips to Petsmart or lugging almost half my weight in cat litter up and down the stairs all the time. The money I save on cat litter can now be put to use buying them better food and other things. I’m not spending my days with litter pieces stuck between my toes. I don’t have to scoop a litter box twice a day or more, and I don’t have to see one either. A simple toilet flush is a lot easier especially when I have to ask someone to watch them when I’m gone.

So there’s my little rant on toilet training. Is it weird? Yes, totally. It makes me look like an insane crazy cat lady, but do I regret doing it? Absolutely not, because I know I’m not crazy, I’m just a lazy pet owner, and I have saved myself a lot of time and money. The convenience of it is has been so worth it.
