March Birchbox and Ipsy Bag Reviews

I’ve been meaning to post this for a while as I usually post the reviews for the previous month around the time I get the April boxes.

Birchbox

mar_13_bb

If I were to put Birchbox and Ipsy up against each other (which I usually do), Birchbox would have won hands down for the month of March, not that the products for the month were anything special, Ipsy just dropped the ball. So here’s what I got in my March Birchbox and what I thought of the products:

  1. Incoco® Design Nail Polish Appliques – I had never tried any nail strip type product before so I was excited to try these. I wasn’t crazy about the design, but Incoco appears to have some better designs on their website. Now putting these on wasn’t exactly easy and they didn’t turn out fantastic, but they held up way longer than had I just painted my nails. (I’m talking 2 weeks vs. a few days.) I did apply a top coat to my nails even though it said you didn’t have to so I have no idea if that helped.
  2. Serge Normant Meta Revive Dry Shampoo – My hair is fine and gets oily quite quickly so this was fantastic on those nights I wanted to go out late but didn’t want to shower again. I don’t think I’d be able to use it rather than washing my hair for the day. It gave my hair just enough “oomph” for the night though.
  3. Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream – Maybe it was the sample size for this product and not knowing how much to use, but I just didn’t see anything special about this shave cream. It had the consistency of a Clearasil cream cleanser, that didn’t lather well or do much of anything but rinse right off. I’m not one to use shave cream often in general. My Schick Hydro Silk razor and some body wash is normally enough, but $20 for the full size of this product just seems outrageous to me.
  4. Madewell for Birchbox Nail Emery Board – The other side of this emery board is a floral print that just isn’t really my taste. I guess it’s quite appropriate for Spring, but wasn’t for me. It also wasn’t anything special. Just a basic nail file.
  5. Caldrea Body Lotion – I have to be honest with this one. I haven’t had dry skin so I haven’t tried these at the time of writing this. I will try and post an update if I do try them.

Ipsy

mar_13_ipsy

Ipsy just didn’t live up to my expectations with this box. The bags themselves lately seem to be getting cheaper and cheaper, but usually the products aren’t that bad. March was pretty disappointing though.

  1. La Fresh Travel Lite Makeup Remover 8ct Pouch – These are the perfect size to travel with. I was excited when my aunt (also an Ipsy subscriber) sent them to my house with all her other  not so favorite Ipsy products. They will definitely live in my travel bag, but nothing really special about them.
  2. Juice Beauty Hydrating Mist – I’m not sure whether the sprayer for this sample was bad or what. I was excited to try this product, but the sprayer was just not meant for the product. I sprayed it on my face as I would with my Skindinavia finishing spray but I ended up getting soaked which just frustrated me. I have no idea if it would have worked better on my hair because after the shower it gave me, I put it away.
  3. GlamRX GlamRX Mini Freestyle Palette – I suppose if I redid my makeup on the go, this would be a good idea, but it was fairly useless to me.
  4. yaby Eyeshadow Refill – I got the two more neutral shades in the picture. They weren’t anything special that I really wanted to try, so these honestly didn’t get used. I put them in the GlamRX palette and they are now sitting in a drawer.

My overall impressions should be obvious. Birchbox had it all over Ipsy for March. As a sneak peak towards next month’s review, I think Birchbox again may be a winner.

{Sunday Social} Week #9

Sunday Social

Boy is my internet slow today. Writing this has been a bit of a pain. It took nearly 5 minutes to simply get to the page to write the post. *end of rant* Happy Sunday everyone! It’s been a gorgeous week of nearly perfect weather. This week’s post is all about Twitter. If you don’t follow me already, follow my blog @littlelifeblog AND me @andreamocko for more general ramblings.

1. When did you join twitter? – According to Twitter, I joined in February of 2008. My blog account is a bit more recent and is less than a month old.
2. Who is your favorite non-celeb to follow? – I used to be a bit obsessed with the Apple fan community. I liked to tweak my Mac here and there to the point it didn’t look like a Mac. At one point I found my favorite icon designers had twitter accounts and I wanted to follow them. Louie Mantia (@mantia), a great designer, happens to be one of the few I still follow. {I sure hope he doesn’t find this mildly creeperish.} I’m slightly jealous of his frequent trips to Disney theme parks.
3. Who is your favorite celeb to follow? – It’s a tie between two “somewhat” celebrity accounts – the Tone It Up girls (@ToneItUp) and Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal (@oatmeal). The Tone It Up girls are always so motivating. Matthew Inman always seems to have my laughing or learning something new. Last week I learned about a crazy rainbow killing shrimp.
4. Have you ever had a celeb respond to a tweet? – I use Twitter more for following companies and products I like truthfully. While I don’t use Twitter as my #1 news source, that’s it’s main purpose for me. Following celebrities often clutters up my feed with rants about first-world problems.
5. What is your favorite store/brand to follow? – I have to say I enjoy following Sephora the most. They have some really handy tips.
6. Give us three tweeps we should be following. – Carly (@collegeprepster) is one of my favorite blogs at the moment. Definitely check her out. @omgthatspunny is another one that I enjoy. They post some pretty silly puns. And for one of the cutest families ever, be sure to check out Missy (@xopinkpistachio) another one of my favorite bloggers at the moment.

April 2013 Goals

april-goals

I absolutely love April. It means gorgeous weather is ahead. That means I can start having lunch by the pond again and not have to worry about freezing my butt off as I walk to work.

A recap on March’s projects and goals:

My focus in March was on my budget. I have to say I was a bit optimistic with my savings goals, but I didn’t do so bad overall. I’m really happy with how things turned out.

  • I’ve used Smartypig as my main savings account for a while now. If you haven’t checked it out yet, I highly recommend it. It automatically takes money out of my paycheck and deposits it into various savings goals I have. It’s got a fantastic interest rate as well. You can redeem your savings goals as gift cards and they will actually give you a bonus percentage for certain retailers or you can have it put back in your regular bank. The downside is that it does take a little bit of time to get your money. In some ways this is great, because I really do have to evaluate my purchases, but should an emergency come up, I’d likely need to put the expense on my credit card temporarily and pay for it once the money gets back to my checking account a week later.
  • At the beginning of March, I was planning to save around $315 from every pay check just to save it, around $60 dollars for things on my wishlist, and another $25 for my Christmas fund. I managed to keep to my wishlist and Christmas goals, but I did have to reduce the amount of money I was setting aside to around $200. I give nearly half of my income to my mom every month so that she can pay bills, so usually one paycheck a month just goes straight to her so I had to rethink my spending habits and decided it makes more sense to save less right now than putting things all on my credit card because I was saving too much.
  • March means time to submit taxes and I managed to get mine submitted. I even used a promo code and saved on filing them. I used my refund to pay back the majority of my one remaining balance on my credit cards, and now I’m using a total of 11% of my credit which feels fantastic. I’m really trying to cut back on my use of my credit cards so that I can be able to pay them off completely at the end of the month, so I took my credit cards out of my main wallet and out of my password manager. No easy access to auto-fill the info means I have to think before I buy.
  • Reading – I’m working on reading both Blogging for Dummies and Blog. – Since graduating from college, reading has become an unexpected hobby of mine, so much so I actually went and purchased a Kindle Paperwhite on March 22. I not only read the two books I planned to read, but I read a total of 4 others. The number would have probably been higher but I lent my Kindle to my mom to read a book I had checked out. In any event, 6 books in one month is just beyond ridiculous for me, and seeing that, I upped my reading challenge from 20 books to 30 for the year.
  • Making progress on my room renovations – This is such a big project, and I’m so overwhelmed with it. I managed to get almost through patching with a few spots I need to go over once more. The next step is to start painting which I’m really dreading, BUT before pictures have been taken so I can start letting you all see the progress which is exciting.
  • Completing FMS’s March Photo Challenge. – I really need to find a fun and exciting photo challenge because these FMS photo challenges are just not working for me. I managed to get 16 photos done, but I played catch up for most of the month snapping pictures in bursts rather than daily.

At the beginning of the year, I typed up a document with what I would focus on each month, but stupidly I saved it as “Untitled” in a rush and deleted it. I didn’t realize it until it was removed off my backup drive, so now I’m making this up as I go along, and I’m declaring April’s focus:

Work

Nice weather means I’m going to wish I could still lounge around outside after class or take the dogs out to the local Starbucks for an adventure, so it’s a bit depressing knowing that I’m a grown up now and I can’t because I have to sit behind a desk. Focusing on work will make sure I have a few things to stay focused on:

  • Compiling a list of Skillsoft Courses – My job provides me with courses for various things from computer certifications to stress relief, and I have been meaning to compile a list of them that I think I’d be interested in or would be of use to myself or the students in the office. They may not be able to take the courses, but I can certainly pass on some knowledge to them.
  • The semester ends in May, and I’d like to provide our student employees with performance evaluations and maybe raises before they leave, so I need to figure out the budget which I’ve never had to do, iron out the processes I want to use, and schedule to meet with all of them before they get all stressed out with Finals.
  • Lastly, our department is trying to focus on an online support knowledge base of sorts to help continue to provide answers to our customers while also being able to focus on improving things for the future. Tidying up this space has been on my radar for a while, and I hope that with the help of my colleagues we can get some Spring cleaning done.

Other April projects include:

  • Evaluating my current wardrobe to see what I need to add or replace for warmer weather. I know for a fact I need to replace the basic tanks I wear under some of my more transparent shirts, but I also want to get some new things in bright spring colors. I’m quite tired of my go to winter look of skinny pants, boots, a shirt and sweater over top.
  • I’d like to tackle painting at least my ceiling in my bedroom. Once that’s done, the painting will go quickly because I can do smaller bits at a time.
  • I’m also going to work on managing my time better. That means sticking to my usual routine to get things done, workouts, blog posts, and school work included.
  • I’m also working on something I’ve sort of informally dubbed “Project Andrea.” It’s my fairly extensive plan to revamp my life, and I’m pretty excited to start. I’ll post more about what my goals for this project are in a later post.
  • Also, this month’s photo challenge is Filofax themed so I’m excited. I’ve been revamping my Filofax here and there so I’m excited to share the little updates I’m making.

I’m really thrilled that it’s April. I’m already excited, and we’re only 6 days in!

{Sunday Social} Week #8

Sunday Social

Happy Sunday everyone. This week it’s all about Pinterest. Now I know some people in the Philofaxy community dislike Pinterest. I do find it weird when I find my own stuff on there, but I really enjoy using it to save and share things with other people. I like getting ideas for  fashionable work attire, recipes, and quick tips, but I also use it as my wish list. I’m using it to plan my room renovations, and I also use it as a place to share products I love with others. So check me out on Pinterest if you haven’t already.

1. What is your favorite outfit pin? – So I went to private school from Kindergarten through senior year of high school, that’s nearly 13 years of uniforms. In college, I gravitated towards simple jeans and a t-shirt looks, but when I got my full-time job at a university, I was given one rule for what to wear, “Don’t look like a student.” Easier said than done when your 22 years old and 5’1″. I still get asked if I’m there for orientation on a regular basis. In any event, Pinterest has been a great source of inspiration for how to look professional without dressing like I’m 50. My current favorite look for Spring is this one:

2. What is your favorite food pin? – By far the favorite thing I’ve made so far is going to be the super simple peanut butter fudge recipe. I mean 2 ingredients, a couple minutes, and I’ve been told it’s better than the more complicated recipes.

3. What is your favorite wedding pin? – I have absolutely no wedding pins on Pinterest, and I sort of intend to keep it that way until I have a wedding to pin about which with any luck will be sooner than later.

4. What is your favorite DIY/craft pin? – I don’t typically pin crafts, but I do have a few. I had grand plans to have some of these in my office this winter, but they didn’t happen. Maybe next year.

5. What is your favorite quote/verse/lyric pin? –
Also not a huge pinner of lyrics, but this is one of my favs.

6. Share one more random pin you love. –
Now that Spring’s here, I’m starting to think about what I need to add to my wardrobe for Spring, and I’m thinking these shoes are going to be fairly high on my list.

Meet the Cats

Today, I’m back with another post about the rest of the animals in my crazy house. This week it’s the cats’ turn. I meant to post this last week, but I got a bit overwhelmed last week and needed to take a bit of a break.

We’ve always had cats at my house ever since I was born. My house already had dogs, so somehow I ended up acquiring cats. We currently have three, which I now know in hindsight is WAY too many. Given that I’m 22, living at home, and have three cats, I tend to come off as some crazy cat lady, so let me defend myself really quick, because I’m not. I like all animals. If it were possible, I’d probably have three sloths instead because I find them quite amusing and adorable, but I assume they don’t make good pets. I’d have dogs if I didn’t already have two, and I didn’t have to let them out. For my lazy lifestyle, cats just work better. I can leave for a day or two and as long as they have some food and a flushed toilet {more on that in a bit…} they’re okay. They don’t require that much care.

So that brings me to the cats I have now.

abu-mokey-kittens

The oldest is Abu, named after the monkey in Aladdin. He’s around 9 years old. I got him and his “adopted brother”, Mokey, when I was in high school. He could fit in the palm of my hand when I got him. Now he’s a massive 19lbs. Mokey sadly passed away, but Abu is still quite active for a fat cat. He’s got the personality and looks of Garfield usually, but he can be quite silly at times especially when he poses like this.

Back Camera

After Mokey passed away, I felt Abu needed a friend. I found Skyler at a local Petsmart. She was adorable and also quite cuddly and accepting for a kitten. She came home with me a short 30 minutes later. I honestly wondered what I had done when I brought her home. Abu HATED her, and she turned into a completely different cat. It was non-stop growling for about a month until I discovered the Comfort Zone Cat Diffuser, and Abu and Skyler became friends. Abu accepted her, but unfortunately, she never really accepted anyone else in the house. She’s a few years old now, but she still hates every person in the house but me. I almost feel bad for her because she wants the attention so bad, but if anyone gets near her, she screams bloody murder and goes into full on attack mode.

Normally two cats is the magic number in our house. With only one, they tend to imitate the dogs. Two gives them a cat role model and someone to play with.

BUT… my former roommates cats ended up getting together and having A LOT of kittens. I’m not even sure what the final number was, but I ended up falling in love with one of the first four. I didn’t need another cat. I just figured I could provide a better life for him than he’d have gotten anywhere else, and I already had 2 so honestly what was one more… Apparently that one more is the magic number that makes you seem like a crazy cat lady.

chase-remi-kitten

In any event, I brought Chase home. Again, Abu hated him, and Skyler was confused. This time I was prepared with those diffusers though and the process went much more smoothly. Now two years later, they are all best friends. Abu has someone to cuddle with at night. Skyler has someone to run around the house with. Surprisingly, his favorite friends happen to be the dogs in the house, and now I’m not entirely sure he understands he’s a cat. He’s chewed up a number of shoes and other things in the house. He plays fetch. He sits and speaks on command. He even sits on the sofa just like the dogs and watches the birds with them.

abu-chase

all-three

So now you know the cats who have thankfully become one big happy family, so I guess I have to explain my reference to a flushed toilet earlier in this post. This is usually the part that solidifies everyone’s idea that I’m a crazy cat lady….I toilet trained my cats. Yes, I know that it’s weird. I myself still find it weird to be woken up in the middle of the night to a cat in my bathroom, but the practicality of it all outweighs the weirdness in my opinion.

Vets advise that the rule of thumb for litter boxes is 1 box per cat + 1. Well in my case, that’s a total of 4 boxes. My cats stay in my room when I’m not home, and my room is large, but not large enough for 4 litter boxes. Not to mention, can you imagine how much of a chore it would be to keep 4 of them clean! I obviously didn’t stick to that rule. They happily shared one massive box that I kept in my bathroom. Twice every day, I had to clean out the box. If I was particularly motivated, I took the old litter outside. Otherwise it went in a litter trash can until I felt like taking it out. When I wasn’t cleaning the box, I was sweeping up litter because Chase thought he needed to dig his way to China. My life, needless to say became dominated by that litter box, and I hated it.

I had heard about toilet training cat before and actually considered training one of my previous cats, but we decided against it because at the time, it would have involved my parents’ bathroom which is also accessible from our family room. I imagined someone waking up in the middle of the night or worse a guest not realizing the litter and being pretty annoyed at me so I decided against it. Things were different now though. The cats’ used my personal bathroom, and I was a bit more understanding considering I was the one dealing with the litter chaos. On a whim, I took the plunge into what ended up being one of the most worthwhile but frustrating projects I’ve ever undertaken.

Morning, day, and night, I found myself potty-potty training cats. {It’s still so freaking weird to say…} The package said it could be done in 8 weeks. I’m here to say that’s a flat out lie. Maybe it’s different with just one cat, but I’ve lost track of how long it’s been since I started. I’m on the very last step of the kit (just the seat part that held the different trays), and I really don’t see that ending any time soon. Given our downstairs kitchen sink {that we never use} or a bath mat, they still would rather use them, but I try to look at the bright side of things. I’m always mindful of what is on my bathroom floor so that it doesn’t become a place to pee or poop so now it’s always tidy. I’m not making weekly trips to Petsmart or lugging almost half my weight in cat litter up and down the stairs all the time. The money I save on cat litter can now be put to use buying them better food and other things. I’m not spending my days with litter pieces stuck between my toes. I don’t have to scoop a litter box twice a day or more, and I don’t have to see one either. A simple toilet flush is a lot easier especially when I have to ask someone to watch them when I’m gone.

So there’s my little rant on toilet training. Is it weird? Yes, totally. It makes me look like an insane crazy cat lady, but do I regret doing it? Absolutely not, because I know I’m not crazy, I’m just a lazy pet owner, and I have saved myself a lot of time and money. The convenience of it is has been so worth it.

March Photo-a-Day Challenge Recap

fms-photo-challenge-march-2013

I’m really trying to finish a photo challenge. I, admittedly did better than last month, but still not fantastic. I managed to snap a total of 16 photos, a little over half of them. I’m starting to wonder if it’s the topics that aren’t inspiring me rather than me just being lazy.

As usual, these are just a few of my favorite pictures. If you’re interested in seeing the whole set {all 16 of them} check out my Flickr set.

Day 3 - Key #fmsphotoaday

I absolutely adore my Coach key ring I keep my car key on. I wish I had bought more than one so that I could replace this one now that it’s starting to lose it’s rhinestones. I keep my work keys on the Vera Bradley fob so that I can find them easily in my work bag.

Day 12. In the distance #fmsphotoaday

Who would have thought I’d ever love a picture with my neighbors’ barn in it. It looks much more appealing in this picture than in real life.

Day 18. {New} shoes #fmsphotoaday

I bought these boots in November. After being on back order, I finally got them in March. I absolutely adore them, I just wish I had them sooner.

For the month of April, I’m taking a break from FatMumSlim’s photo challenges and switching over to Carla’s second Filofax photo challenge. I loved the first so I’m excited to participate in this one.

Welcome to April everyone!

{Sunday Social} Week #7

Sunday Social

It’s Sunday, and I’m excited as usual because I love Sundays. Making a routine of Sunday has really made it a lot more enjoyable now that my mindset has changed from “the last day of the weekend before another long week of work” to “the first day to start my week of right.” So here’s this week’s questions:

1. Favorite type of work out to do?  – If any of you have been following my blog for any length of time, you’ll know I’m a big fan of Katrina and Karena from Tone It Up. I’ve never been one to really work out per se. I’d do a few pushups or squats here or there, but nothing that would really do anything. I bought their workout DVD a couple of months ago, and since then I’ve never looked back. I actually feel guilty when I don’t work out every day. It’s really triggered a total lifestyle change for me.

2. Favorite guilty pleasure candy or sweet? –  Okay, so I may be in the minority here, but I’m not a big fan of sweets. I’d rather have a piece of fruit or some veggies any day over a piece of cake which I’m sure my parents enjoyed when I was little. I do enjoy a Java Chip Frappuccino or a White Mocha from Starbucks every once in a while though. {Ok, maybe more than every once in a while considering I have a Gold Card…}

3. What is one thing you continuously forget to do?  Totally honest confession here – brushing my teeth at night. I know that’s terrible, and I’m trying to make it a habit this year. I just  always seem to be going 200% all day until it’s time for bed, and that extra 2 minutes with my tooth brush seems like such a chore. My dentist would probably hate me if they knew, but they always say I’m doing a fantastic job with my teeth.

4. Posts its or phone reminders? – This one’s a hard one. If you read my blog, you know my Filofax runs my life, but I also use my technology for everything, so I don’t particularly like one or the other any better. Phone reminders if it needs to be done at a specific time. I’d also pick digital reminders on my phone, iPad, or computer for anything I’m going to need access to for a while or over and over again just because they hold up better than post it notes. Anything else that doesn’t repeat and doesn’t need to be done at a certain time gets put on post its.

5. Favorite picture currently on your phone that always makes you smile.

I snapped this on my iPad a few days ago. I was trying to read in my living room. Zoey, one of my dogs, had to cuddle in my lap. Chase, one of my cats, being obsessed with my iPad insisted he needed to be right there as well. I tried getting a picture of all three of us together, and this is the best I could get without Chase taking up the whole picture.

{Sunday Social} Week #6

Sunday Social

Another week has come and gone. As much as I dislike Sundays because it means the weekends over, I happen to love them too because Sundays are my days to reboot and get prepared for the up coming week.

Sidenote: I love random acts of kindness, and I just had to share this because it made my day. I happened to be in line at a Walmart yesterday picking up a few things. The couple in front of me told me I could go in front of them. That in itself would have been a nice enough gesture because even that never happens at my Walmart, but the story continues. A few minutes later they switched to another shorter checkout lane. As they were finishing up, they noticed I was still waiting in line, so they called me over to their lane, but as I walked over, someone with more stuff than the girl in the previous line beat me to it. The couple then said to the guy who was in front of me, “Sir, she’s with us. Can she go in front of you?” The guy happened to say yes. I didn’t know these people at all, but it was such a nice gesture, so thank you mystery Walmart couple.

This Weeks Questions:

1. What is your favorite thing about Spring? – The weather is absolutely perfect. I also love spring colors and all the cute clothes.
2. Favorite kind of flowers to grow or receive? –  I love lilies. I’m not exactly sure why, and I don’t have a particular favorite kind. Just any kind of lilies.
3. What is your favorite nail polish color? – I’ve never actually thought about having a favorite color. I kind of just pick based on what mood I’m in or what new colors I’ve gotten in the mail. Recently I’ve been using more mauve-y shades. It’s girly but not too girly that it’s unprofessional. As somewhat of a manager now, I think my days of neon pink nails are coming to an end.

Abu
4. What is your favorite out door activity? – If it’s not playing with my dogs out in the yard, it’s bringing the dogs AND cats outside and sitting on the deck with something to drink and something to read. I have an iPad but that’s not so great in sun, so I’m considering getting a Kindle at some point.
5. Do you have any fun Spring plans? Details :) – Work work, and more work. Oh, and the massive bedroom remodel I’ve been planning. I’m going to start making some posts about it soon.

{Update} Finally Focused

I’m pretty excited because I had a bit of an epiphany recently in terms of this blog. I’ve wanted to start a blog for a while now. I’ve mentioned before that I’ve got the starting a blog part down packed. Keeping up with it is another story. I’ve lost count of how many blogs I created only to write one or two posts that would never be published.

As a goal for 2013, I hit this ground running with this blog, and I’m happy to say that I’ve managed to stick with it for 3 months so far. During that time, I’ve written over 30 posts that I actually did publish! In those three months, and I’ve watched the stats increase day by day. I’ve realized blogging is a lot harder than I had imagined, but it’s also a much more rewarding experience than I had ever imagined which is likely why I’ve stuck with it for as long as I have. BUT… I’ve started struggling a bit in terms of what to write about.

As a new blogger, I’m learning things as I go, but I’ve also been reading a few books along the way. I just recently finished Blogging for Dummies by Susannah Gardener which was a bit dated {it came out in 2008}, and offered only a few bits of useful information that I didn’t already know or consider. {It was a book for dummies after all and I wouldn’t say I’m a dummy.} I’m currently reading Blog, Inc.: Blogging for Passion, Profit, and to Create Community by  Joy Deangdeelert Cho and Meg Mateo Ilasco., and I’m enjoying this book a bit more. The interviews are fantastic, and I feel like I’m getting a lot more out of this book than the other.

One thing that has repeatedly come up over and over again is “finding your niche.” I wanted this blog to be about my life, so  I never felt like there was just one thing I wanted to write about. {My life is actually a lot more than just Filofaxes which isn’t very apparent on this blog right now.}

But what did I actually want to write about?

When I started this blog, I had this dream that I’d become one of those super-creative/cute bloggers that have fantastic posts about home renovations, recipes, and fun outings in my life with amazing photos. {Think Pink Pistachio, iHeart Organizing, or The House of Smiths.} Things just weren’t turning out that way, and I was becoming discouraged. So I started thinking about why they weren’t working.

That’s when I had the epiphany. Those bloggers live vastly different lives than I do. I’m not a housewife with young kids and lots of time to make picture perfect posts about my home renovations and arts and crafts, and  I certainly don’t have plans to become a mom any time soon, nor do I plan on quitting my job. That dream, at least in this point in my life, is utterly unrealistic.

So what is realistic?

Well I’m a 22-year-old woman who’s managed in four short years to work her way up from a student making minimum wage at an on-campus job to managing those students. I’ve graduated from college in 4 years {which apparently isn’t the norm anymore}, and I’ve even started pursuing a Masters degree. Never in a million years would I have seen myself where I am now four years ago. I’m trying to find my way in a world where I often don’t feel like I fit in or understood or ready for for that matter.  I think there’s something valuable and worth blogging about in how I’m finding my place in the world whether it be my struggle with finding a style that conveys that I’m not just another student at my university but an employee or how I manage my time and stay sane in this sometimes hectic life I call mine {with a bit of fun stuff thrown in there too of course}.

So I’ve finally found my focus for this blog. Don’t worry Filofax fans, my Filofax posts aren’t going away. My planner, after all, is what makes this blog possible. I am excited to finally have some sort of realistic direction for this blog. I feel like it finally has a purpose that can not only help me, but maybe help some other young women in this world who may be trying to make everything work.

Oh and a quick extra update… I have a new Twitter account for this blog should you want to follow it that way. You can follow me @littlelifeblog.

Meet the Dogs

Today is the last day of my Spring Break, and in true blogger fashion, I’ve been enjoying the morning cuddled up on the sofa with a cup of coffee and my iPad. I had planned to have today’s post be the first in a series about my room renovations, but truthfully, my room is still covered in a layer of dust from patching holes, and I’ve yet to tackle the mess. In it’s place is another post, this time introducing two of the craziest members of my household.

For as long as I can remember, my family always had animals. My parents took in a stray cat, Kitty, before I was born, and six months after I was born, they adopted a Chocolate Lab/German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) mix, Tucker, who became my “brother” as I’m an only child. I had a lot of memories with those two growing up. At one point I held a wedding ceremony where I “married” Tucker wearing a toy ring and veil, and poor Kitty tolerated all of my antics every day including playing dress up. Tucker made it to 14 years old; Kitty, the cat who my parents were advised to put down before I was born, made it to 23!

Over the years, I had many other pets. Fish, hermit crabs, cats, and of course lots of dogs. One even made it on to the local news as my university’s mascot complete with her own basketball jersey! Tucker, didn’t know it, but he paved the way for a long line of GSPs in the family. My dad fell in love with the breed. He claimed it was the best because they were bred to hunt all day and were still great family pets. They also had cool traits like super short hair, big lungs for running, and webbed toes for swimming. Of course, they also came with a TON of energy.

{We currently have two dogs AND three cats, but in an effort to not support the idea that I”m some crazy cat lady, I’m going to start with the dogs this time.}

Dexter

Dexter meeting kittens for the first time.

Dexter was the first of our GSPs. One lovely day as my dad was reading the local newspaper he ran across the local animal shelter’s Pet of the Week – a 2-year old purebred GSP. Later that day, my mom and I ventured to the shelter to see him. After 2 seconds of hearing his non-stop barking, we walked away and found another dog that was a little less quiet, Skeeter. We brought my dad back later to look at Skeeter, but he fell in love with Dexter as he passed. $16 dollars later, we had Dexter going home with us. Imagine our surprise when he didn’t make a sound at home for weeks. He was a fantastic dog, a little goofy, but fantastic, but at 7 years old, he went into organ failure, and we had no choice but to put him down. Shortly after he was gone, we decided we needed another dog in the house.

RemiPup

@ 8 weeks old

Meet Remington, the quirky, energetic one of the bunch. He came to us all the way from Ohio, and I’m sad to say that at 8 weeks old, this dog had spent more time on a plane than I have in 22 years. He was flown to us in a roundabout way from Chicago to Dallas to Baltimore in what seemed like the longest flight ever. I’m sure he was pretty terrified as well. Now he’s a bit larger at around 70lbs, but he still thinks he’s a puppy and loves to sit in laps. If he had his choice, he’d spend all day chasing tennis balls outside. He’s a bit obsessed.

German Shorthaired Pointer

Remington @ 3 years old

About a year after we got Remington, we found a listing for another GSP on Craigslist in North Carolina. Her name was Zoey and she was a year older than Remington. At the time, Remington was becoming a bit too much for our elderly rescued Chesapeake Bay Retriever, so we figured a playmate more his own age would be better. She’s a little clumsy. Tripping up the stairs and walking into walks are specialities of hers, but she’s the most lovable dog ever. Just like Remington, she also doesn’t understand that she’s 80+lbs. She also needs to be in your lap at all times.

Zoey

Zoey

From the day we brought Zoey home, the two of them have become best buds and go everywhere together. They make my life crazy, and they wake me up barking at deer and whatever else wanders onto our property, but at the end of it all, I love them dearly.

Playing in the Snow

Next week, be ready to meet the other 3 critters in the house. I’m off to enjoy the last few hours of Spring Break before I have to return to work.
